I never had the opportunity to see Bob Gibson pitch, but I grew up absolutely mesmerized by stories of how he was feared and respected by everyone who ever faced him.
I later learned that the great Buck O’Neil tried to sign Bob Gibson, to the Kansas City Monarchs, out of high school but Gibson chose to attend Creighton University on a basketball scholarship and had a short stint with the Harlem Globetrotters before his Hall of Fame baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals! For my money, there has never been a better pitcher than “Gibby” in his prime.
Upon learning of his passing I sat to create this painting of Gibson as my way of expressing the respect and admiration, for him, that I have carried with me since I was a wee lad. He will be so missed.
